Boys basketball roundup: Jefferson returns from layoff with impressive win

Thomas Jefferson didn’t play like it had been idle for a week.

In the Orange Wave’s return to the court after two forfeits for an altercation with South Shore last week, it was at its best in a 63-46 victory over Baltimore City (Md.), 63-46, in the Big Apple Basketball Invitational at Baruch College Saturday night.

“The team responded well,” coach Lawrence (Bud) Pollard said. “They still don’t understand [why we had to forfeit two games]. We are appealing the decision. Hopefully, we can get those two games back.”

In a 69-64 loss to South Shore Jan. 15, Jefferson forward Edson Avila and South Shore’s Wayne Martin exchanged punches. A good portion of the South Shore crowd spilled onto the court and both benches emptied. The PSAL invoked its “Brawl Rule,” handing out two forfeits apiece to both teams.

Jefferson (9-8) put the incident behind it on Saturday as Shamel Williams had 10 points and 11 rebounds, Tyquan Goodlett followed with 10 points and 10 assists and Thaddeus Hall and Davontay Grace each added eight points apiece. Maryland-bound guard Nick Faust was held to 22 points for Baltimore City.

“We played real well,” Pollard said. “We had a good practice [on Friday] and I knew we were gonna win today. I don’t know how many teams in the city could beat us today.”
