The Big Bang

Attempting to meld James Ellroy with Stephen Hawking yields an astronomically weird noir, “The Big Bang.”

Antonio Banderas plays a private detective in LA who gets tangled with a giant boxer, a cache of stolen diamonds and a creepy physicist planning a game-changing experiment with a particle collider.

Neither the tough-guy talk in the room where the detective tells the story of the movie to detectives who slap him around, nor the many jokey disquisitions on physics seem unforced. And scientific notions like the possibility of being a wave and a particle at the same time lead only to cheesy twists. For a noir, the film is way too talky and convoluted, yet for a physics lesson, it’s trash.
