85 years of heart attacks

True New Yorkers know the real sound of summer is the Cyclone roller coaster roaring over Coney Island’s boardwalk.

That tradition began June 26, 1927.

To commemorate 85 years of exciting and terrifying kids of all ages, the Cyclone offers lucky riders celebrating the big birthday today something special: They pay exactly what the very first passengers did.

Twenty-five cents!

Yup, two bits a ride!

(Get there early: The special price starts at noon and runs for, yep, 85 minutes!)

For nearly 50 years, the Cyclone held the title as “World’s Fastest Roller Coaster.”

That ended a while back, but the great wooden icon still reigns as one of New York’s finest landmarks, attracting 250,000 riders every year.

Happy birthday, Big Momma.
