Pharrell’s hat trick a welcome sight at Fashion Week

It’s been a helluva “Happy” time for Pharrell Williams, thanks to an Oscar nomination and a Grammy Award.

And if all that success didn’t go to the Producer of the Year’s head, it’s certainly hit his hat — his Vivienne Westwood Buffalo Hat, which made the twitterverse go berserk on Grammy night.

The 40-year-old artist hit New York Fashion Week on Saturday for his collaboration with G-Star RAW. This time he sported a gray version of the Westwood topper that’s been dubbed “the Arby’s hat.”

Williams has always had a fondness for millinery. Last week he was named “Hat Person of the Year” in an online poll by the Headwear Association, and he’s rarely left his house without a sweet chapeau on his head.

Here are the three styles he’s been favoring lately.

The Buffalo Hat

This is the millinery equivalent of the Versace dress Jennifer Lopez wore to the 2000 Grammys. Yes, it’s been mocked as the Mountie and the Arby, but you can expect to see it knocked off and becoming the style of the year. Williams reportedly bought the hat from Westwood’s store, World’s End, where it was part of the designer’s autumn/winter 1982/1983 collection, the “Nostalgia of Mud.” It still sells for about $155. Williams may have been inspired by Chris Benz, who wore the hat at a December event in Williams’ honor.

The Fedora

This felt fedora with the generous brim and the black, Indiana Jones-y hatband has been a mainstay of Williams’ wardrobe. The performer has the same hat in both brown and gray, pairing them with everything from hooded sweatshirts to button-downs. Williams has donned the hat in both warm and cold temps, sporting it at Miami’s Art Basel, in the recording studio and on the streets of New York. A similar style from Borsalino retails for $311.

The Campaign Hat

Grammy watchers were so riveted by Williams’ Buffalo hat that they didn’t seem to notice that he changed headgear for his performance with Daft Punk. While quite similar to the oversize Arby’s hat, this one is closer to the campaign hats favored by the military. This version has an exaggerated, oversize flat brim and a contrasting hatband.
