An elderly woman died in a raging inferno after she was apparently trapped behind barred windows — but her daughter survived by jumping out of a second story window and a couple of neighbors broke her fall.
The fire started on the first floor around 2:50 a.m. at the Bradford Avenue home near New Lots Avenue in East New York, according to authorities.
“She came through the second floor window. My brother in law and I broke her fall,” a neighbor, Henry Grenede said.
Sources believe the fire started from candles that were found in a first floor bedroom.
The 75 year-old woman, identified by sources as Sylvia Travis, was found unconscious and unresponsive at the base of a barred window on the first floor, the sources said.
“It was scary I felt my house was going to be engulfed. There was so much smoke she couldn’t get out,” Grenede explained.
She was rushed to Brookdale hospital where she was pronounced dead. She suffered severe burns to her back and smoke inhalation, cops said.
Her daughter Angela Travis,54, is currently being treated at the same hospital for smoke inhalation, burns, back and leg injuries, cops said.
She jumped out of a second floor window and landed in the driveway.
“Sylvia was a nice lady we shared the same driveway,” Grenede added.
“She and her daughter lived in that house most of their lives,” he explained.
She has been listed in serious condition.
The blaze was placed under control around 3:30 a.m.
The fire doesn’t appear to be suspicious at this time, but the Fire Marshal is investigating, cops said.
