New York City seeks to lure Chinese tourists

The city’s most coveted tourists hail from China, and some New York hotels are rolling out the red carpet to try to cash in, according to a new report.

The number of tourists from China jumped 19 percent in just the last year, Crain’s New York reported.

Even so, many Chinese tourists prefer to stay at hotels in New Jersey, which have cheaper rates and parking lots to accommodate their tour buses.

New York is trying to lure them with special deals, with one Manhattan hotel offering slippers and a teapot in every room, and another offering a $49 Chinese breakfast to tour groups.

Meanwhile, NYC & Company, the city’s tourism arm, is setting up a “training academy” in Shanghai to educate Chinese travel agents on the benefits of booking a hotel in the city, and staying here longer.

Next month, Times Square’s Marriott Marquis will host 300 of Amway’s top vendors Shanghai, who are being rewarded with a five-night stay.
