The MTA said yesterday that MetroCards can now carry balances for unlimited rides and pay-per-ride purchases at the same time.
The change eliminates the need to have separate cards for different payment types and comes as the MTA is preparing to add a $1 green fee to all purchases after March 3.
“This card is the most flexible MetroCard ever offered and the best way to avoid paying the $1 new- card fee by refilling and reusing your current card,” said MTA Interim Executive Director Thomas Prendergast.
Any card with both pay-per-ride value and an unlimited ride purchase will begin using the time-based component first.
Once that expires, the card will then deduct the dollar amounts on it.
The new technology was enabled on MetroCards beginning yesterday.
