Mom tells Dr. Phil son saw shooting of standoff suspect in bunker

An Alabama boy, held hostage in an underground bunker for nearly a week, witnessed FBI agents blow away his armed, crazed kidnapper, the tyke’s mom said.

Jennifer Kirkland spoke to TV shrink Phil McGraw and detailed what her 5-year-old son Ethan endured at the hands of 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes of Midland City, Ala.

“He absolutely did” witness the fatal shooting of Dykes, Kirkland said, in an interview that’s set to air on “Dr. Phil” tomorrow.

“He says the Army came in and shot the bad man.”

Dykes boarded Ethan’s school bus and fatally shot driver Charlie Poland on Jan. 29.

But Poland was able to stall long enough for almost all the kids on his bus to escape before Dykes gunned him down and snatched Ethan.

The pair spent the next several days hunkered down in his underground bunker, before authorities made their big move on Feb. 4.

Ethan hasn’t been sleeping well since his rescue, and Kirkland fears her son’s reaction when he board a school bus.

“I’m scared of how he’s going to take getting on a bus [again],” she said.

At one point of tense hostage talks, Kirkland said she offered to trade places with her son.

“I wanted to be there. I would have taken his place, had I been allowed to,” she said. “I asked to speak to Mr. Dykes.”
