Smith Haven Mall reopens after concerns about roof collapse

A large New York mall has reopened after a leaking roof spurred worries of a possible roof collapse.

No one was injured when the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove was evacuated Monday. Smithtown Building Department Director John Bongino says inspectors and fire marshals checked for damage Tuesday.

A mall spokeswoman says some stores will remain closed until further notice. But most of the mall, one of the biggest on New York’s Long Island, was open as of 12:45 p.m.

Leaks were reported in about a dozen stores after a heavy rain followed a weekend blizzard.

There have been several roof collapses in the region, including at a vacant store in Patchogue, a bowling alley and a home.
