Man falls to his death in front of morning commuters

A man plunged to his death Friday from the top of a building in the Garment District and landed in the middle of an open-air parking garage, horrifying pedestrians and workers during their rush-hour commute.

The unidentified man fell from a towering commercial building on Broadway near West 30th Street around 9:40 a.m. and slammed into the pavement of a “Central Park” garage next door, narrowly missing dozens of parked cars.

Garage manager Pierre Luis, 61, said he was doing paperwork when he heard the man’s body hit the ground and thought something had happened to one of the vehicles.

“I saw people outside looking,” he said. “As I went closer, I saw the man on the floor.”

“I was scared,” Luis added. “I didn’t look, I didn’t want to get too close.”

Police were investigating the incident and have not said whether the man committed suicide.

The building from which he fell houses showrooms for jewelry designers.
