‘The Carrie Diaries’ gets a Samantha

Carrie Bradshaw was once the lead character in a funny and influential HBO series called “Sex and the City.”

Like many of us, she had a back story, as did her BFFs Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte.

In the film “Sex and the City 2,” a flashback established how Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) met each one of them when she moved to New York.

She met Charlotte (Kristin Davis) in a subway station (a homeless man exposed himself to them), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) in Bloomingdale’s and a poodle-haired Samantha (Kim Cattrall) in CBGBs where Sam was a bartender in 1986.

The chick-lit world may be chagrined to discover that one of those charming stories is about to change. In The CW’s “The Carrie Diaries,” which turns back the clock to the precocious writer’s childhood, it seems Samantha was around, too. Too young to be a bartender anywhere, though.

In an effort to bolster the struggling series, Samantha will be introduced as a character when it returns this fall. The role has not been cast.
