Subway returning to Rockaways after Sandy fixes

Subways will roll back to the Rockaways in time for the summer.

An “all-out” push by the MTA will restore A-train service on May 30 on tracks ravaged by Hurricane Sandy, Gov. Cuomo said yesterday.

MTA employees and contractors have restored 1,500 feet of track, rehabilitated two stations and replaced miles of signal, communication and power cables.

Rockaways residents were thrilled to hear the news.

“I’m impressed they fixed it so quickly,” said Allison Wolf, who has lived in the Rockaways since 2010.

“I thought it would have taken longer, considering all the work they had to get done,” Wolf said.

Sandy caused $4.8 billion worth of damage to subways, bridges and tunnels.

Some of the work will take years — including the restoration of the South Ferry subway station.

The South Ferry repair job and other Sandy-related work will be overseen by a new Sandy Recovery and Resiliency Division within the MTA’s NYC Transit division.

“The goal is to protect all points where the subway system could be flooded by a storm,” Cuomo’s office said.
