Queens man in 32-day torture nightmare

A crew of kidnappers abducted and tortured a Queens immigrant, demanding $3 million ransom from his relatives in Ecuador as they held him captive in a Long Island City warehouse for more than a month, officials said yesterday.

During the 32-day ordeal, captors burned Pedro Portugal’s hand with acid, threatened to cut off his fingers, and beat him so viciously that he lost teeth before he was finally rescued Monday, said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.

Christian Acuna, Dennis Alves and Eduardo Moncayo are accused of abducting Portugal in broad daylight on April 18 in front of his Jackson Heights accounting office.

Investigators suspect the gang thought Portugal’s family was loaded, since he drove a Mercedes-Benz and “flashed cash around,” a law-enforcement source said. But his family had no way of paying the ransom.

Moncayo, 38, allegedly called out Portugal’s name on the street, and flashed what looked like an NYPD badge. The kidnappers forced him into an SUV, beat him, and held him at knifepoint, prosecutors said. They then allegedly covered his eyes drove him to the 43rd Avenue warehouse, bound him to a chair and beat him.

Moncayo claimed in court that he was trying to get money for his sick mother.

And Alves, 32, allegedly told detrectives, “I didn’t treat him bad, I told him it was just business.”

The circumstances behind Portugal’s release were not disclosed. Three more suspects are being sought.
