Digital wallet app gives NYC taxi discount

New York City taxi rides are going to be marked down by 50 percent for many passengers.

The discount, sponsored by the tech firm, Isis Mobile Wallet, comes as it and other ventures battle to convince people to convert to a digital wallet instead of traditional credit cards or cash.

To qualify for the discount, consumers need to download the Isis app and link it to an American Express card.

AmEx is a co-sponsor of the discount.

When using the app to pay, half the cost of the ride will be refunded to the passenger’s AmEx account on their next statement — up to $100 in refunds.

The taxi promotion is good for up to $100 in statement credits from now through June 1st, the company said.

Isis Mobile Wallet, launched last summer, is a joint venture of AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.

The taxi discount is just the latest skirmish in the battle for digital wallets.

Google and eBay are already duking it out for market share in the space, along with startups like Square, the newest venture by Jack Dorsey, one of the founders of Twitter.

Gadget king Apple is also rumored to be in the midst of producing its own mobile-payments system.

Digital wallets allow consumers to pay with a swipe of their phones in place of credit cards and cash.

Folks who want to add on more than one AmEx can get double the discounts. But beware: Even if you have two AmEx cards it is still only valid for one statement cycle.

Savvy New Yorkers would be wise, therefore, to wait until April when the rain will force the Big Apple’s pedestrians to scurry for the comfort of a dank, smelly cab.
