Thief nabs $31,000 from van near police precinct

A daring thief stole $31,000 in cash after breaking into a minivan just three blocks from a police precinct in Tribeca, police sources said.

The driver told cops he was carrying the cash to load an ATM when he parked his gray Honda Odyssey at the corner of West Broaday and Leonard Street, around 12:30 p.m., Tuesday.

The victim, who refused to give his name, said that he left the car near NYU law school, about three blocks from the 1st Precinct, and returned to find the tinted rear-driver’s-side window shattered on the ground and the cash was gone.

“It’s horrible, really bad,” he told the Post.

The stunned worker said he believed he must have been followed or staked out by someone who knew he carried large amounts of cash and prepared ahead of time to pull off the brazen midday heist.

“They had to,” he added.

No one has been arrested and police are reviewing the route the driver took to get over the Brooklyn Bridge and into the neighborhood.
