Nick Frost’s salsa not enough to save generic rom-com

Tell me British actor Nick Frost (“Shaun of the Dead”) is not one of the world’s most lovable actors, and I will accuse you of not being human. Unfortunately, that fact alone can’t save James Griffiths’ “Cuban Fury” from being a rather unremarkable, if endearing, entry in the quirky rom-com genre.

Frost is Bruce, who as a youth was a salsa-dancing superstar until bullies crushed his desire to dance; now he’s a schlumpy man in middle management, beset by new bullies like Drew (Chris O’Dowd), the office d-bag. Both take a fancy to new boss Julia (Rashida Jones), who happens to have a thing for salsa.

That’s enough to get Bruce back in touch with his Latin roots, aided by his grouchy former teacher (Ian McShane, always a welcome sight). The unlikely image of Frost as a dancing dynamo is a treat, but ultimately this is a melody you’ve heard many times before.
