Designer to the stars bilked investors to fund luxury life: lawsuit

New York designer Rubin Singer, who’s styled big-name stars like Beyoncé and Kerry Washington, blew $560,000 in business loans on personal luxuries, according to a new lawsuit by irked investors.

The seven investors say Singer, who trained under Oscar de la Renta, has not repaid the funds, but instead has spent the money on David Barton gym memberships, limousines, online dating services and even a Thailand getaway.

“Singer’s vacation had no business purpose,” the money men and women gripe in the Manhattan civil suit.

One of the plaintiffs, LA resident Keith Kaplan, says Singer, 35, also owes him thousands for opening doors in the fashion world, including introducing him to Neiman Marcus honchos and Hollywood stylists.

The deadbeat designer also never paid his attorney to trademark his name, the suit claims.

Singer made Beyoncé’s custom black iguana skin and Chantilly lace leotard for her Super Bowl performance and an elegant silk gown for Washington’s character, Olivia Pope, for an episode of last season’s “Scandal.”

The third-generation couturier, whose grandfather dressed Soviet bigwigs including Joseph Stalin, sells his edgy frocks at high-end stores like Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue for between $800 and $3,000. Other famous Singer fans include Lucy Liu, Alicia Keys and Heidi Klum.

The garments are “sold around the world and Singer has received hundreds of thousands of dollars of revenue from the sales,” the Manhattan civil suit says.

“Despite the success, plaintiffs’ loans have not been repaid and investors have received no return,” according to court papers.

“Rather, Rubin Singer Inc. corporate funds were used to fund Singer’s extravagant lifestyle,” the suit says, adding that Singer “withdrew thousands of dollars in cash from RSI accounts.”

The angry investors — Michael Beck, Tad Buchanan, Kaplan, Michael Lehr, Lana Leiva, Julie Smith and Terri Steinberg-Zajac — want their money back, plus damages.

A rep for Singer did not immediately comment.
