Holmes shocked(!) he caused stir with digs at Jets offense

Jets wideout Santonio Holmes caught some blowback from his controversial comments Thursday — what a surprise — and he wasn’t happy about it. No shock there, either.

On Friday morning, Holmes tweeted: “What a great morning 2 awake 2 hear the media frenzy about Holmes quitting on his team, and he sucks, and he always blaming someone else.’’

The injured wide receiver followed up by tweeting: “For the record. This media stuff never distracts me, I hate that our #NyJets fans have to read this ‘crap’ when things aren’t going good.’’

Holmes had suffered through a frustrating weekend, catching just one pass in the Jets’ loss to Tennessee before injuring his hamstring and exiting the game. He is likely to miss Monday night’s game in Atlanta as he recovers.

Asked about his chemistry with rookie quarterback Geno Smith and his struggles to make an impact against the Titans, Holmes said Thursday, “I played 49 plays and all I know is that I had one catch. That’s all I can attest for.…It’s the offense’s job. I can’t throw it to myself and catch it, otherwise I would.’’

Giants star Hakeem Nicks had caused headlines by saying something very similar following a zero-catch effort in Week 3 in Carolina.

Holmes, who has had a contentious relationship with the media at times, had attempted to clarify his remarks.

“I just have to do my part which is the position that I’m in, which is playing the primary ‘X’ receiver and a lot of times you get double-covered [and] get taken out of the play,” he said. “The progression and the reads from the quarterback have to go elsewhere.’’

After sitting out much of training camp recovering from a string of foot injuries, Holmes did not have an amount of time to build chemistry with Smith. He has been targeted a team-high 23 times, but has just 10 catches.
