Thief swipes more than 600 pumpkins from farm

This thief was out of his gourd.

More than 600 pumpkins were stolen from a Long Island farm last week, just as the autumn tourist season kicks off.

No one knows who snuck onto Rottkamp’s Fox Hollow Farm in Calverton in the dead of night early last week and instead of smashing pumpkins, went about snatching them — $4,200 worth, according to Riverhead Police.

“Obviously, it’s someone who is selling them,” Det. Timothy Hubbard told The Post.

While some farms ship pumpkins in from other areas, these future jack-o-lanterns were grown at Rottkamp’s, said Hubbard, who noted that fall is a busy time for the area.

“Our roads our here are filled with people coming from out west to pick pumpkins and cornstalks. It’s almost like a second season for our farmers out here.”

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call Riverhead police at 631-727-4500.
