Jets report card

OFFENSE

The Jets actually put up a good amount of yards (330), but it is impossible to get past the four turnovers from rookie QB Geno Smith (23-of-34, 289 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT, 2 fumbles). The offensive line let Smith get hit 11 times and looked helpless against the Tennessee blitz. The running game showed flashes, but never got going.

GRADE: F

DEFENSE

Smith’s turnovers led to 28 points and the Jets defense deserves a little bit of a pass for playing on short fields for much of the game, but an elite defense should hold the other team to field goals. When the offense struggles, as the Jets did, the defense has to pick it up. The Jets secondary gave up a lot of passes. Darrin Walls struggled in his first start of the season. Titans QB Jake Locker (18-of-24, 149 yards, 3 TD) picked them apart. They did shut RB Chris Johnson (15 rushes, 21 yards) down.

GRADE: C

SPECIAL TEAMS

K Nick Folk remained perfect with two more field goals Sunday. The coverage unit had a breakdown on a 35-yard punt return from Darius Reynaud. Their own return teams struggled on punts with Jeremy Kerley managing just seven yards on two returns. They also had two penalties on special teams.

GRADE: C

COACHING

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg has to scale things back for Smith, who looked lost at times Sunday. Mornhinweg also has to answer for that fourth-and-1 pitch to Alex Green, a little-used backup. Ryan’s defense was shredded by Locker and the penalty parade continued with 10 more after last week’s 20. Ryan better figure out how to fix this quick.
