NYPD cracks down on speeding

The NYPD ticketed more than 700 drivers over the weekend as part of a crackdown on out-of-control speeders.

Police set up speed traps throughout the five boroughs to minimize deaths and injuries caused by speeding and traffic infractions, police authorities said.

A total of 736 summonses were issued to speeding drivers in the three days, with 266 issued in Queens, 213 in the Bronx and 113 in Brooklyn.

The speeding crackdown is just the latest program to combat reckless drivers. The city installed it’s first speed cameras this fall, created 14 neighborhood “slow zones,” and increased the number of speed bumps.

Deaths caused by motorists are down 30 percent, but speeding continues to be the leading cause of collisions citywide, the NYPD stated.
