David Berlin, a New York-based attorney who has represented boxers, has emerged as the front-runner to be named the executive director of the New York State Athletic Commission, The Post has learned.
The announcement of Berlin’s appointment could be imminent or could come in several days, sources said.
According to his website, Berlin has represented boxers for the past decade, including Michael Moorer, Iran Barkley, Joey Gamache and Joshua Clottey.
His clients have included Teddy Atlas and he has severed for several years on the board of The Dr. Theodore A. Atlas Foundation.
Berlin received his bachelor’s degree from Princeton University in 1986 and his J.D. from New York University School of Law in 1989.
He has specialized in criminal defense work and represents children receiving special educations services in New York.
In addition, he has written several articles on the legal issues surrounding the sport of boxing.
“Time will tell whether he’ll be a good commissioner,” a source close to the situation told The Post. “But whoever gets the job will need more staff in the office.”
Berlin could not be reached for comment.
