3-point stance: wildcat, hitting time and the wide receivers

CORTLAND – The Jets are getting into the dog days of camp. They have now been here a week and have just been going against each other. They still have another week to go before facing the Lions next Friday. Rain is in the forecast today, so we’ll see if they’re able to practice through it or are forced to stop practice again.

Here are three things on my mind this morning:

1. CAT CHAT – Here is one thing to keep in mind when considering Rex Ryan’s comments yesterday that the Jets will use more Wildcat: Ryan uses that phrase as a catch-all for running offenses. Ryan used it a ton last year and then Tim Tebow really ran the read-option most of the time.

So when Ryan says it, remember he could be talking about using Geno Smith as a running quarterback with some option plays.

I think it’s a good idea for the Jets to use Wildcat or read-option because Marty Mornhinweg has to get creative with this offense. The Jets don’t have the talent to just line up and run right over you or to throw it over you. It’s going to take some trickery and creativity for the Jets offense to flourish.

2. GOAL TO GO – The Jets are scheduled to do goal line drills for the first time today. This is when camp gets fun. There’s a lot of hitting and a lot of smack talk between the offense and defense. It’s very tough to evaluate the offensive and defensive lines, running backs and linebackers when there is little hitting. Today, we’ll get a better impression of where everyone is at. The spotlight will be on the defensive line, which is expected to be a strength of this team.

3. CATCHING ON – The Jets wide receivers have played much better in training camp than they did in the spring, when they were dropping balls all over the place. I’m still not convinced this unit will be able to get open consistently enough to help either quarterback, but you have to give them credit for playing better in the last week.
