Heritage Ball

Architects, designers and industry professionals join together for the annual AIA New York and Center for Architecture Foundation black tie event, which celebrates the tradition of design excellence. This year’s gala will recognize a highly distinguished group of individuals who have tirelessly demonstrated their commitment to the importance of design in New York City and beyond: Cesar Pelli of Pelli Architects; Robert E. Party @the Center

Party@theCenter is the signature event of the Center for Architecture, bringing together 600-plus design professionals for a night of networking, music, dancing and cocktails. Party@theCenter is also the official after-party for Heritage Ball, the AIA New York Chapter and Center for Architecture Foundation’s gala at Chelsea Piers. 9 pm to 2 am. $60 door. Masquerade Ball at NYDC

The Black & White Masquerade Ball will be held at the New York Design Center in support of the Alpha Workshops Studio School. Jim Druckman of the NYDC and Kenneth Wampler of the Alpha Workshops will be there for the elegant cocktail party paying tribute to Truman Capote’s legendary 1966 ball. 6-9 pm. $150. Liveable Cities of the Future

Join keynoter NYC Deputy Mayor Robert K. Steel and 15 engineers, civic leaders, educators and futurists in an open discussion of innovative urban planning for the cities of tomorrow. The symposium will cultivate best practices and innovative strategies for sustainable urban development and facilitate the evolution of New York City into a real-life laboratory for urban innovation. Walking Tour: Washington Square, Cooper Square, Bond Street and the Bowery

Walking Tour: NYU Superblocks and SoHo

This tour examines the architecture of the Robert Moses-era superblocks south of Washington Square and also identifies proposed sites included in NYU’s evolving 2031 campus plan. With Houston Street as a physical and ideological divide the tour continues south to explore new construction in the protected SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District. Washington Square Village, I.M. Pei’s Silver Towers, Aldo Rossi’s Scholastic Building and Jean Nouvel’s 40 Mercer St., as well as the Little Singer Building and the Haughwout Building, are included. 10:30 am. $20. Rooms for the Younger Generation

Designing for children is not the same as designing for adults. This panel of experts will discuss the differences and will show examples of rooms and furnishings that make both youngsters and parents happy.
