‘The Phantom Menace’ crosses $1 billion at worldwide box office

“Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace” has entered the galaxy of films that have made more than $1 billion at the global box office and is set to overtake “The Dark Knight” as the 10th-highest-grossing movie of all time.

Thanks to Fox’s 3-D rerelease, “The Phantom Menace” has become the first “Star Wars” title to cross $1 billion at the box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Although the movie was only released in 3-D two weeks ago, it’s earned more than $73.4 million thanks to higher-priced 3-D tickets, the trade reported.

With an additional $1 million, “The Phantom Menace” will match and could then overtake “The Dark Knight” as the 10th-highest-grossing movie of all time.

“The Phantom Menace” is the 11th film to earn more than $1 billion globally.

Fox is owned by News Corp., which also owns The Post.
