Paulina Gretzky’s mom set her up with golfer fiancé

Paulina Gretzky: a ragamuffin who needs to be set up by her mom with weary single guys.

It’s a likely story, right? But Gretzky, hockey royalty turned world’s premier golf WAG, offers that as the origin story for her relationship with Dustin Johnson in a Q&A with Golf Digest that accompanies her controversial magazine cover. A new behind-the-scenes video from the shoot shows her at her hopeless, ragamuffin-y worst.

After describing how her famous parents – NHL superstar Wayne Gretzky and actress Janet Jones – introduced her to the sport of golf, here was the 25-year-old’s response to how she was introduced to Johnson, who missed the cut at last week’s Masters:

“At the end of 2011, my mom played with Dustin in the Wednesday pro-am at Tiger’s tournament at Sherwood. She told Dustin about her daughter, blah-blah-blah, and invited him to the house that night,” she said.

“I’m sure he was rolling his eyes, and so was I when my mom invited me over to meet this golfer she had just met. So I show up looking like a complete ragamuffin, and here’s this really cute guy. I didn’t stay long, but he was such a gentleman, so endearing. He’s always been that way to me. We exchanged numbers, and here we are.”

Gretzky’s racy Instagram photos rocketed her to Internet stardom, but she credits a video of her golfing for helping her land a role in a TaylorMade commercial and the magazine cover.

“As it turns out, that was the smartest thing I’ve done with golf,” she said. “Posting that video showed people that I could actually play. Shortly after that, TaylorMade called to ask if I’d do a commercial. And now I’m getting this opportunity with Golf Digest. I should have listened to my mom and become a golfer.”
