Unhappy Carlos Tevez goes AWOL from Manchester City

MANCHESTER, England — Carlos Tevez risked further punishment from Manchester City on Wednesday after returning to Argentina without permission.

The wantaway striker flew to his homeland Tuesday after choosing not to contest a fine of two weeks’ wages given to him by City for misconduct during its UEFA Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich in September, when he was accused of refusing to play.

He was expected to appear for training Wednesday morning but did not turn up. His PR adviser, Paul McCarthy, said he was visiting his family.

“He’s gone to see his family. They flew back when he flew back, when he was suspended by Manchester City, and he’s gone back to see them,” McCarthy said. “We’ve said all along that Carlos is aware of the situation in terms of getting back to his fitness. I can’t really say much more until he’s back in the country.”

Tevez — who earns an estimated $400,000 (£250,000) per week — was expected to appeal the fine, but McCarthy said it was time to draw a line under the saga. The fine was reduced from four weeks to two weeks by the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA).

“The initial fine that Manchester City wanted to impose was four weeks. They were advised by the PFA that wasn’t going to be sanctioned,” McCarthy said.

The Argentina international twice requested a transfer in the past year, and despite his decision to accept his fine and suspension, it is unlikely he has any future at City beyond the January transfer window.

City manager Roberto Mancini said he would welcome Tevez back into the first-team squad if he apologized, which he has not yet done.
