Avery in battle for Rangers’ final roster spot

Sean Avery is competing with Erik Christensen for the final forward spot on the Rangers roster, coach John Tortorella said Monday.

“We’ll have to make a decision,” Tortorella told NHL.com after the team’s preseason finale in Switzerland.

The coach did not say when the decision will be made.

Avery did not play in the final two preseason games in Europe because Tortorella said he is already familiar with his ability.

The website said Christensen was used at center and on the wing in Monday’s 8-4 loss to Swiss club EV Zug.

“You look at (Christensen) and a big reason why we get in (the playoffs last season) is that shootout,” Tortorella said. “I know what Sean is and the type of player, what he does. I wanted to see Erik in different situations. We’ll make our decision there as we approach our opener.”

The Rangers open the regular season Friday against the Kings in Stockholm.
