New York the leading state for TV pilot production

New York is the new Hollywood.

The Empire State is home to production on a record 11 broadcast drama pilots, more than any other state, largely due to New York’s 30 percent tax incentive, Deadline Hollywood reports.

For the first time, Los Angeles is no longer the most popular location for drama pilots, slipping to third place with only 8 of 41 drama pilots shot there. Hollywood’s share of pilot production remains the same when comedies are factored in, but those typically employ fewer people.

Last year, New York was home to 9 broadcast drama pilots, up from zero the year before, when the future of New York’s tax credit was still in limbo.

In terms of other popular locations for TV pilots, Vancouver, which has long been a cheap, popular alternative to LA, posted an increase in production this year (up to 9 from 4.5 last year). The currency exchange rate with Canada is a fraction better than it was last season. 11 broadcast pilots, in total, are filming in Canada, with one in Montreal and one in Toronto.

The only other city/state that’s home to multiple pilots is Chicago, which also has a tax-credit program in place.
