LICH’s nursing school freezes admissions, won’t accept fall freshman class

Applicants anxiously waiting to hear if they were accepted to a Brooklyn nursing school were devastated to abruptly learn last week that the school isn’t accepting a freshmen class for this fall.

Nurse hopefuls who applied to Cobble Hill’s Long Island College Hospital School of Nursing will now have to wait at least six months before starting their education.

“This is just devastating. My entire family’s devastated. Now I’m going to be set back at least six months,” said Kirill Yemelyantsev, 27, who had applied several months ago.

He called the nursing school last week to see if he’d been accepted – only to be told it had merged with SUNY Downstate and was freezing admissions due to the shakeup.

“I said, ‘Are you guys kidding me? It’s the middle of June, and way too late to apply to any other schools. You guys can’t do that,” he said.

Students have not yet officially been notified of the freeze – though on June 9th, a dean posted the following on the school’s Facebook page:

“The possibility that there will not be a freshman class in the fall was not anticipated…we had interviewed quite a few applicants and had already prepared an acceptance list when we were told to freeze admissions. That was only three weeks ago.”
