NYers still want Paterson to stay — but also think he’s terrible

ALBANY – Yet another new poll shows New Yorkers want embattled Gov. Paterson to finish his term in office, even while saying he’s doing a lousy job as governor.

The just-released Quinnipiac University survey found voters disapproving Paterson’s job performance, 61-21 percent, identical to the results of a March 5 poll.

Voters favored Paterson finishing out his term this year, 50-39 percent – slightly better for the governor than the 46-42 percent in the last poll.

The Quinnipiac survey found a huge drop in support for Paterson last week amid allegations that he illegally sought to prevent a Bronx woman from obtaining a court order of protection against a top gubernatorial aide and that he had lied under oath to the state Public Integrity Commission.

But that drop off appears to have bottomed out, according to the poll.

The new poll found black voters disapprove the job Paterson, the state’s first African-American governor, is doing, 40-35 percent, while white voters disapproved, 67-18 percent.
