GetGlue sticks with Oscar viewers

At least one unexpected winner emerged from Sunday’s nights Oscar ceremony: social entertainment site GetGlue.

The fledgling service — which encourages users to check in and share what they’re watching in return for stickers, coupons and discounts on DVDs — got a big boost from the telecast despite down ratings this year.

GetGlue partnered with Oscars.com to embed a widget on the site for viewers to share their thoughts on the ceremony. According to company figures, GetGlue had 31,000 check-ins during the Oscars. During the first 30 minutes of the show, it logged 10 check-ins every second.

This is the fourth major entertainment event for GetGlue. The Grammys attracted 18,000 check-ins, the Superbowl garnered 20,000 and the Golden Globes tallied 11,000.

GetGlue is run by former Goldman Sachs executive Alex Iskold, who is partnering with major entertainment destinations to help them track who’s watching their content live — a big plus for advertisers eager to avoid getting busted by DVR recordings.

The site also builds profiles of users’ entertainment preferences. GetGlue has 900,000 users who use the app and the site to share their entertainment likes and dislikes with friends either online or via mobile platforms.

GetGlue has drawn investments from Brad Burnham at Union Square Ventures, Jim Robinson IV at RRE ventures and Allison Goldberg at Time Warner Investments
