Clinton Hill Walking Tour

These walking tours mark the publication of Brooklyn Historical Society’s “Fort Greene Clinton Hill Neighborhood & Architectural History Guide,” by Francis Morrone. He will lead a group through Clinton Hill, which includes some of the most beautiful residential architecture in New York, and sites associated with Walt Whitman and the Pratt family. Lt. Governor Richard Ravitch on “The Future of American Housing”

Lt. Governor Richard Ravitch once worked as a developer/builder to create Riverbend, Waterside and other multi-family developments, including 45,000 units of affordable housing nationwide. He helped create and served as chairman of the Corporation for Supportive Housing and served as co-chair of the Millennial Housing Commission created by Congress to examine the federal government’s role in meeting the nation’s affordable housing needs. In 2009, Mr. Ravitch was asked by Governor Paterson to help with the fiscal problems faced by New York State. During this talk, Ravitch will present the housing crisis and offer guidance for a national housing policy that appreciates the needs of people and the importance of good design. 5:30-8 pm. Free. “Louis Sullivan: The Struggle for American Architecture” Screening

The life and career of Louis Sullivan – creator of the commercial skyscraper, pioneer of Modern architecture and acknowledged “master” to Frank Lloyd Wright – has been brought to the screen in this documentary by director Mark Richard Smith. Smith traveled the Midwest and East Coast to view and film Sullivan’s surviving works. Robert Twombly, Sullivan’s latest biographer, will also be present at the screening and reception. 6:30 pm. $45.
