Chuck in the muck

Let’s hope Chuck Schumer doesn’t get this smarmy in New York’s Senate race.

New York’s senior senator used a graphic sexual slur in a fund-raising e-mail for Democratic Massachusetts Senate candidate Martha Coakley, calling her opponent, Scott Brown, “a far-right tea-bagger,” FoxNews.com reports.

The left’s favorite insult for members of the fiscally conservative “tea party” movement has been making the rounds on cable TV for months, but liberal statesmen of Chuck’s stature had thus far preserved some semblance of decorum.

No more.

This likely isn’t the sort of help the rapidly tanking Coakley, who’s campaign has proceeded from gaffe to gaffe, needs. Today, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee unveiled an ad using an image of the World Trade Center to depict Brown as cozy with Wall Street — before rapidly yanking it.

As for Schumer, who’s used schoolyard-bully tactics to muscle any possible opposition to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, one wonders: When did the master politician, architect of the Democrats’ Senate majority, become such a boor?
