K-Rod makes it interesting

PORT ST. LUCIE — If tonight’s outing here against the Nationals was any indication, Frankie Rodriguez is going to be a fun-but-wild ride for Mets fans from here on out. The team’s new All-Star closer made his first Grapefruit League appearance with the Amazin’s in the eighth inning, and K-Rod didn’t disappoint.

He was far from boring, either, putting runners on the corners with none out in a two-run game before striking out the next two hitters and getting out of trouble with a soft bouncer to third.

The Mets went on to a 4-1 win.

“Right now, my delivery and mechanics are where they need to be,” said Rodriguez, whose Grapefruit League debut was delayed by the World Baseball Classic. “I’m ready to start the season now.”

The Mets said Rodriguez will pitch again tomorrow here against the Marlins, then get a four-out save opportunity next week before pitching one inning in the April 3 exhibition against the Red Sox at Citi Field.

The Mets resume Grapefruit League play tomorrow at home against the Marlins in a 1:10 p.m. game that will be televised live by PIX-11. Promising prospect Dillon Gee, who already has been sent down but remains a Jerry Manuel favorite, is getting the start.
