The ESPN 1050 Radio Web site has an interesting post on the adjudication of cases in Manhattan similar to Plaxico Burress’ weapons possesion charge.
Andrew Marchand cites John Caher, a spokesman for the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, saying jail time is a strong possibility, but not a definitive one. Caher’s statistics say 10 percent of 104 people sentenced in Manhattan in 2007 on second-degree possession were convicted of the charge.
Of those whose charge was reduced to third-degree possession:
* 41 percent ended up serving more than one year in jail.
* 24 percent ended up serving one year in jail.
* 6 percent served less than one year in jail.
24 percent had only probation, the only way Burress likely wouldn’t miss significant time with the Giants.
