Jets don’t want Shanahan

A source familiar with the Jets’ coaching search said the team wants to hire a first-time head coach rather than a proven head coach. That means former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan is out. A source said the Jets have indicated they’d like to hire someone who is currently an assistant coach. They’d like to duplicate the success Miami, Atlanta and Baltimore had this year with their first-time coaches.

This could indicate the Jets want a coach who is not interested in any personnel control. A veteran like Shanahan would probably want some say in personnel matters.

Marty Schottenheimer is also out of the picture. His son, Brian, interviewed for the job today along with the other in-house candidate Bill Callahan. A source said Brian has a legitimate shot at the job. I don’t know if I’m buying it, though. That would be a tough sell to Jets fans.

Steve Spagnuolo interviews tomorrow, and he is the favorite for the job.
