Rossi to Start for Italy

American-born forward Giuseppe Rossi could make his first start for Italy when the injury-plagued champions host Montenegro in a World Cup qualifier on Wednesday night.

With Luca Toni suspended, Italy coach Marcello Lippi has to redesign his attack for the World Cup qualifier.

“Rossi was born to play,” Lippi said. “He’s a special player and he’s ready for this national team.”

Born in Teaneck, N.J., and raised in nearby Clifton, Rossi is a dual citizen and turned down a chance to play for the United States.

He made his debut for the Azzurri on Saturday, coming on for the final 21 minutes of a 0-0 tie at Bulgaria. His through ball to Alberto Gilardino was one of Italy’s few highlights, even though Gilardino wasted the opportunity.

“If Lippi calls me, I’ll be ready,” Rossi said.
