Look to ship Seahawks

Gone is RB Shaun Alexander. WR Deion Branch has a foot problem. The once dominant offensive line is a shell of its former self. And now Matt Hasselbeck’s sore right knee has him on the sidelines.

In short, the Seahawks’ offense isn’t what it used to be. Given the difficulty of their upcoming schedule, this week was like a last-gasp opportunity for Seattle’s best to shake off their sogginess and dole out a throwback performance. Now, with Charlie Frye starting at QB, we’re more excited about another “Traveling Pants” sequel than we are a Seahawks scoring flourish.

There is a glimmer of hope if you’re in a pinch. Bobby Engram returned for last week’s debacle in the Meadowlands, so he should be more crisp today after a full week of practice under his belt. Plus, if Falcons rookie QB Matt Ryan can be effective, as he was last week at Lambeau, we think these Birds can find some air-time as well — even with a small Frye at QB.

After this week, however, the schedule isn’t going to do the Hawks any favors — long trip to Tampa Bay in Week 8, Eagles visit in Week 10, long trip to suddenly tough Miami in Week 11, at Dallas Week 13. Now’s the time to shop Julius Jones. If Engram posts a good game today, put him on the block tomorrow. And if you haven’t already, make alternative plans for Hasselbeck.

BIG WEEK

RB Thomas Jones (Jets, vs. Bengals) — Cincy is giving up more than 170 yards per game on the ground. After Brett Favre’s six-TD outing in the Jets’ last game, Bengals will focus on defending the pass.

RB Willis McGahee (Ravens, at Colts) — Baltimore will try to keep Colts offense off the field by using ball control. Le’Ron McClain will get his share of carries, but we think McGahee finally comes through with his first solid fantasy outing of the season.

QB Gus Frerotte (Vikings, vs. Lions) — Ryan Leaf could find a way to throw effectively vs. paper Lions defense.

BIG WEAKS

RB Michael Turner (Falcons, vs. Bears) — Stout run defense will force rookie Ryan to beat them through the air.

RB DeAngelo Williams (Panthers, at Buccaneers) — He got the big fantasy numbers last week, but Jonathan Stewart still will get his share of carries. Tampa has not surrendered a rushing TD this season.
