Barcelona prez stumps for salary cap

First the Bundesliga bigwigs said an MLS-style salary cap would be the way to go in the future. Now Barcelona president Joan Laporta agreed that copying the American model used in MLS, the NFL and NBA would be a great idea.

“There are interesting things that we have to study in Europe, such as a salary cap,” Laporta said yesterday. “Maybe we have to establish some parameters for revenues and players’ salaries but maybe not as strict as in MLS.”

Naturally. With Real Madrid spending like the Apocalypse is coming, what the heck else is he going to say? His motives are likely self-serving. After seeing his la Liga rival buy Cristiano Ronaldo AND Kaka and try to purchase the entire known world, it’s easy to see why he would stump for a salary cap. And the fact is anybody pushing that movement should probably invest in Kevlar, lest somebody from Real Madrid, Chelsea or Manchester City knock them off.

But in all seriousness, it seems to be an idea that’s gaining traction. Most responsible European clubs cap wages at about 50 percent of profits, so the notion shouldn’t be an outlanding one.

Do you actually ever expect to see it in your lifetime? If so, what about in one of the big leagues? Which one? Hollar at us…
