Mexico’s Aguirre rips U.S. style, ignores El Tri’s woes: “That’s a dangerous cocktail”

The U.S. has dominated Mexico recently heading into today’s 3 p.m. clash for the Gold Cup title. But don’t expect El Tri coach Javier Aguirre _ back after a three-game suspension for kicking an opponent _ to give his players a Win One For The Gipper speech about breaking the slump.

Aguirre is trying a different aproach, the ostrich technique. He’s going to stick his head in the sand and ignore it, in hopes that it goes away.

“I don’t tell that to my players, or how important this game is to their country, or the history of this (rivalry) or about the United States. That’s a very dangerous cocktail,” Aguirre said before yesterday’s practice at Giants Stadium.

The U.S. is 9-0-2 in their last 11 home games against El Tri; so, is Aguirre overly impressed with the American’s game?

“What do I think about the United States? I think they live off opponents’ errors, and stack eight in the back and use the clock in their favor,” Aguirre was quoted as saying on the CONCACAF website. “It’s going to be a good test for us. It’s a final we wanted and I’m assuming the fans wanted the same thing.”

I guess that is rather rude. When Mexico coughs the ball up playing their beautiful futbol, the U.S. should give it right back and let El Tri start the show again.

But seriously, what do you make of Aguirre? Do you think he really believes that, or is he just playing to the U.S.-hating Mexican fanbase _ a fanbase that has given him a lot of grief, and will call for his head if he loses the Aug,. 12 World Cup qualifier in Azteca? And do you believe he really doesn’t use their losing skid as a motivational tool? Do you think he’ll kick a U.S. player on the way by? Share your thoughts…..
