Toronto waives speedy Johann Smith

The fastest man in MLS couldn’t outrun a pink slip, with Toronto FC waiving forward/midfielder Johann Smith today.

The 22-year-old signed with Toronto as a free agent last August 15 after a failed stint in Europe. He played a total of 14 games, but most were as a late sub with the team looking for “a spark,” or hopeful longball. He made just three starts, logging a total of 418 minutes, going scoreless with only one assist.

It’s a shame, really. The speedster from Connecticut was highly-regarded when he signed with Bolton, and actually made the big club. But he never improved his shaky first-touch, and never found a way to put his blistering 10.5-second 100-meter speed to good use. Now Dominic Oduro is probably the fastest player left in MLS. So the Red Bulls have that going for them…oh, wait. Nevermind…

So, where do you figure Smith ends up? Figure Juan Carlos Osorio brings him in for a look? Or the USL? Share your thoughts below….
