Starr Report

Matt Lauer (right) leaves tomorrow for his part of the “Today” show’s two-day global telecast – which begins Monday with Lauer in Greenland, Ann Curry in Antarctica and Al Roker in Ecuador. It’s part of NBC/Universal’s “Green is Universal” initiative.

“We are not going there for two days to take a political stand,” Lauer told me yesterday. “We’re going to show firsthand what’s happening in these three microcosms and give living examples of how life for people in those places is changing.

“We’ll give you the information and then you decide,” he says. “In Antarctica, for example, the ice there on the shield is melting twice as fast as experts thought 10 years ago. Is it a normal pattern of climate change? Is it global warming? We have to be careful we don’t go off and do two shows and then forget about it.

“This is a company-wide initiative, but it’s not all-or-nothing,” he says. “I have three kids 6 and under and I have an SUV. Am I really proud of that? No, but the fact of the matter is that I do [have an SUV]. That doesn’t mean I have to give up my SUV, but I can make changes in other parts of my life to offset the impact of the SUV.” The telecasts – anchored at 30 Rock by Meredith Vieira, who interviews Al Gore Monday – mark what’s believed to be the first-ever simultaneous telecast from the top, bottom and middle of the world.
