PS3 gets less memory, hurray?

Sony Computer Entertainment America’s (forever more known as SCEA) announced that they’ll be introducing a 40GB model of the PS3 on Nov. 2 and it’ll be bundled with Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray. It’ll retail for $399.

At the same time, the 80GB model will be $499, a Benjamin less than the original launch price.

Sez SCEA president and CEO Jack Tretton, “We’re pleased to offer the consumer a lower price point without sacrificing the core technology components that make PS3 the most advanced high-definition entertainment system available. Every PS3 comes with a Blu-ray drive, HDMI output, an integrated Wi-Fi connection, Cell Broadband Engine and a built-in hard-drive.”

Of course, they are sacrificing something: backwards compatibility.

The 40GB PS3 won’t be able to play PS2 titles at all. Anyone who wants to play their old PS2 faves will have to get the 80GB model. Assuming it’s one of the games that works with the system’s limited PS2 backwards compatibility.

Hmm.
