State of the Blueshirts

Both Ranger and Islander fans alike are anticipating tomorrow’s meeting, the first of many between the two clubs. The Isles broke out to a strong start before faltering last night against the new-look Capitals (who, as an aside, have some of the best of the new-style jerseys). The Rangers lit the lamp freely against Florida, but couldn’t find their offense against Ottawa.

Sean Avery was the biggest casualty of their 2-0 loss to the Senators. He’s out 2-4 weeks with a 2nd grade shoulder separation, but his absence has made it essential for Tom Renney to tweak the lines. Marcel Hossa is back up with Jaromir Jagr, reprising the role in which the oft maligned winger has been most productive. Marty Straka will be skating with Brendan Shanahan in Avery’s stead. Chris Simon could be credited for much of the recent bad blood between the Isles and Rangers. His two-handed attempt to decapitate Ryan Hollweg has created a significant air of animosity, and the first pre-season meeting between the clubs cemented the chippy feud. Jason Strudwick stood up for his teammates in that game. His leadership and experience would be preferable to Paul Mara’s presence against the Isles on Wednesday.

It’s an important game for the Rangers not solely because of the bragging rights at stake, but because it will help the club to immediately counter their loss with a victory. The young players on the roster will know adversity as the season progresses, but avoiding an early skid will help build the confidence necessary to weather such trials.
