Register only one on waivers

PORT ST. LUCIE -– The Mets have put reliever Steven Register on waivers in an apparent attempt to keep the young right-hander in their system.

According to a source who had access to the waiver wire, Register was the only Met included as of this afternoon.

Register came to the Mets as a Rule 5 draft pick from the Rockies last December. As a Rule 5 choice, the Mets must keep Register on their 25-man roster the entire season or offer him back to Colorado this week.

The Mets like Register but don’t have a spot for him in their bullpen. They appear to be hoping no team will claim Register in the next two days and that the Rockies won’t want him back, which would allow the Mets to send Register to the minors. Even if Colorado takes him back, though, the Mets could still end up with Register by way of a trade.

Register had a 3.12 ERA in 8 2/3 innings with the Mets this spring.
