A win before Red Sox Nation invades

A quick wrap-up from Port St. Lucie after the Mets’ 3-0 Grapefruit League victory over the Astros here today: 1. The victory was the Mets’ seventh in eight games after a 0-3 start.

2. Aside from John Maine’s four innings of no-hit ball, Billy Wagner, Aaron Heilman, Ricardo Rincon and Carlos Muniz combined to throw five innings of shutout ball. Wagner struck out two in his only inning of work, while Muniz worked out of a two-on jam in the ninth to pick up his second save of the spring.

3. Outfield hopeful Angel Pagan legged a blooper into a double in the second inning yesterday while raising his spring average to a team-leading .429. That latest example of all-out hustle from Pagan drew raves from Willie Randolph after the game.

4. Duaner Sanchez and Orlando Hernandez will have separate long-toss sessions on Monday to see how well they recovered from mound activity Saturday. If El Duque — who has yet to pitch in an actual game this spring because of foot problems — holds up well from the long toss, he will throw a simulated game Wednesday.

5. The Mets are expecting possibly the largest home spring-training crowd in their history today when Johan Santana faces the Boston Red Sox at Tradition Field. The 1:10 game is already sold out and is being shown live in New York on SNY. Jon Lester and Hideki Okajima are among the scheduled pitchers for Boston.
