‘Kids’ keep Mets on a roll

A quick wrap-up from Jupiter after the Mets’ 6-2 Grapefruit League victory over the Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium: 1. Mets relievers Pedro Feliciano and Matt Wise both impressed Willie Randolph with one inning of solid work. Each struck out two batters, and Randolph was so taken with Wise’s change-up that he actually compared it to Johan Santana’s. That’s high praise, considering Santana is widely considered to have the best change-up in all of baseball.

2. The Mets were so short-handed because of injuries to their regulars that they brought several rookie-league level players to Jupiter. The “kids’’ — as Randolph called them – came through, with short stop Ruben Tejada going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and third baseman Richard Lucas scoring a run.

3. A key veteran addition, though, provided the big bat – backup outfielder Angel Pagan went 3-for-5 (all singles) with two RBIs after getting the start in center. Randolph praised Pagan, calling him one of the best athletes on the team, and the former Cub could be in line for significant playing time this season.

4. It was the Mets’ fourth consecutive Grapefruit League win after a 0-3 start.

5. Johan Santana will try to make up for his rocky Mets debut last week tomorrow against the Dodgers in Port St. Lucie. Brad Penny starts for L.A. Santana gave up three runs in just two innings last Friday against the Cardinals at Tradition Field.
