Lawmakers closing in on state budget

ALBANY — Legislative leaders were close to a deal on the new $142 billion state budget early Saturday, though few details were available and no formal announcements had been made.

Even as some budget bills were being printed late Friday night, leaders didn’t know when they would be able to make a formal announcement.

Legislative leaders had hoped to announce an agreement before the weekend so the budget could be approved Monday, a day before the official deadline.

But Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver — a master at the budget endgame — said there were still outstanding issues involving charter schools and pre-kindergarten funding.

Sources close to the talks told The Post that negotiators had all but wrapped up a budget package that would require Mayor de Blasio to find space in public-school buildings for charters or reimburse them for rent at private facilities.

The mayor also was scheduled to receive about $300 million a year to fund pre-K.
