Brooklyn’s Long Island College Hospital dies again

The State University of New York board of trustees has again voted to shut down Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn.

The vote came after the hospital got a one-week reprieve — when a Brooklyn judge said SUNY can’t close it without following open-meeting laws.

Yesterday, about 120 healthcare workers and community residents drove to SUNY Purchase to attend the open meeting and re-vote.

Herdley Hill, 55, a registered nurse at LICH called the closing “a mistake” due to SUNY’s failure “at the central issue, which is how to operate the hospital efficiently.”

A SUNY spokesman said the hospital loses about $1 million every week.

The board of trustees’ vote was “difficult but necessary,” said spokesman David Doyle.

“This is the latest of many actions needed to stabilize the finances of Downstate Medical Center and preserve its 8,000 jobs and Brooklyn’s only medical school,” Doyle added.
